For most of the fitness population, with the exception of sports specific (they need it too) and bodybuilding, we need full body workouts. This is the essence of functional fitness. In specific sports there are movements that we need to enhance, so we work specific drills to build those. However, after that to increase total body performance even those athletes need functional fitness. The only people who do not, or should I say is counter productive for, is bodybuilders because their goal is a aesthetic (how they look) one. We all need to be able to move in all planes of motion and any time we begin to restrict that motion by isolating a specific muscle group we weaken or potentially danger the opposing muscle group. Which is why you see tons of guys at the gym with huge upper bodies and stick legs. You will also find out that over time they have major knee and lower body problems from not balancing their workouts. Hip replacements and knee replacements abound. So find your perfect workout and lets get functional.
